Abstract
This study involved secondary analysis of the main national data source for sports participation in Britain, the General Household Survey, in order to analyse trends in sports participation. A series of indicators is devised that show the major dimensions of sports participation behaviour. This contrasts with conventional analysis which concentrates on individual sporting activities. These aggregate indicators enable the identification of clear trends in a much clearer way than looking at individual sports. Our approach indicates that there has been more dynamism in sports participation behaviour than previous sports research has revealed. In particular: This increase in participation over the 1977 to 1987 period was accompanied by changes in the pattern of sports participation. Previous sports research has established a clear association between sports participation and a series of demographic and socioeconomic variables such as age and sex. The empirical results show that age and being female acted as lower barriers to participation in 1987 than they did in 1977. In particular:Keywords
