Calcification of the Auricular Cartilage in a Patient with Hypopituitarism

Abstract
CALCIFICATION of the auricular cartilage has been reported infrequently, generally in association with conditions that produce local injury to tissue such as frostbite,1 2 3 4 5 6 7 trauma1 , 2 and inflammation.1 , 2 , 5 , 8 Metabolic disorders implicated in other reported cases include ochronosis,9 , 10 hypercalcemia,11 acromegaly4 , 12 and adrenal insufficiency.13 This report describes the only known case in which the calcifications occurred in association with prolonged untreated hypopituitarism.Case ReportA 49-year-old warehouse worker was in good health until pneumonia of the right upper lobe developed 16 years before this study.
