Generation and evolution of vortex-antivortex pairs in Bose-Einstein condensates
Abstract
We propose a method for generating a spatially separated but clearly correlated vortex--antivortex pair in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a toroidal potential. Our simulations show that in toroidal condensates vortex dynamics can be very different from the homogeneous case. The results are supported by a classical model using image vortices. In general our method offers an effective example of coherent generation and control of vortex dynamics in atomic condensates.Keywords
