Vortex dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract
We propose a method for controlled preparation of moving vortices in a ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate. We explain the creation of the vortices in terms of dynamical instability of solitons, and show that the vortex dynamics can be modeled with the classical Magnus force, when an additional constraint due to the inhomogeneity of the condensate is taken into account. We find that in inhomogeneous condensates the nature of interactions between vortices can be quite opposite to those expected for homogeneous condensates.
