Abstract
A charged-particle beam passing through a dielectric sheet releases carriers whose collection serves to detect the beam. A simple device to demonstrate this effect has been constructed and tested. By applying sufficient bias to electrodes on the faces of the dielectric sheet, the device can be operated at gains of 1000 or more. The device shows promise of applicability to position-sensitive and single-particle detection. Keywords
