Abstract
The reliability of semiempirical pseudopotentials in calculating static electric dipole polarisabilities is demonstrated. The finite-field method is used to evaluate the polarisabilities of the alkali atoms. The agreement with experimental values and other accurate theoretical calculations is very good. Keywords
