Abstract
In 1965–1966, 33·0% of 945 “normal, healthy” villagers living in a non-malarial part of Zanzibar, Tanzania, had less than 10 g. haemoglobin per 100 ml. blood. Necator americanus was a cause of anaemia, but S. haematobium was not, though both parasites were endemic. Anaemia was hypochromic and microcytic in type, and responded well to treatment with ferrous sulphate.
