Dietary Care of the Patient with Chronic Oliguria

Abstract
A system of diets designed for clinical use in which protein, potassium, sodium and fluid intakes are controlled is presented. These regimens are proposed for the nutritional management of selected subjects with chronic renal disease who are being maintained by periodic dialysis. The major objectives of the system are to establish a dietary program which will aid the patient in maintaining a controlled level of intake of protein, sodium, potassium and fluids both at home and in the hospital, and still allow the greatest possible variety in foods consumed in order to achieve the ultimate goal of a high level of adherence to dietary restrictions. The principles of design and the details of composition of the diet are presented. Meal plans, food lists and recipes are included. The need for integration of nutritional management with medical care of the patient is emphasized.
