Abstract
Treatment of four PAH adsorbed on silica gel with a gas stream containing ozone and 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene leads to the formation of the K-region oxide in each case. A similar treatment using ozone alone did not give oxide formation. The oxide formation is thus due to one or more oxidants derived from the ozone-alkene reaction. We suggest that acetone oxide or dimethyldioxirane are good candidates for these oxidants. The results suggest that oxidants derived in this manner may be partially responsible for the observed production of mutagens and carcinogens in polluted atmospheres containing ozone, alkenes and particulate-adsorbed PAH.Keywords
