Abstract
Histoplasma capsulatum has never been cultured from lesions of the human eye, even if clinical findings have implicated this organism in the etiology of uveitis.1-10 Amphotericin B (Fungizone) therapy has been highly effective in the treatment of experimental histoplasmosis and in the management of histoplasmosis in man.6 The penetration of amphotericin B into the eyes following intravenous administration has been demonstrated in rabbits.11 Material and Methods The right eyes of 24 white New Zealand male rabbits weighing initially 1 kg (2.2 lb), were injected with 0.01 ml of saline suspension (1.02× 106/ml) of a 48-hour-old yeast phase culture of H capsulatum (S-76) grown on blood agar at 37 C (98.6 F). Inoculations into the anterior chamber were made after 1 to 2 drops of 0.5% tetracaine hydrochloride were instilled in each eye.
