Abstract
Summary: Plant remains have been found at the base of gravels attributed to the lower part of the Summertown-Radley stage of the upper Thames Pleistocene succession, with which a mammoth fauna and Middle Acheulean implements are associated. The flora, which on the whole is similar to that of the district at the present time, includes a few species now restricted to northern or alpine regions, thus indicating a colder, although by no means an arctic, climate. In the Oxford district the lower gravels of the Summertown-Radley stage are succeeded by others containing an Elephas antiquus fauna; there is evidence of a later cold period, with which Acheulean implements are not associated.
