The value of serial estimations of placental lactogen for fetoplacental function testing in the diagnosis of intra-uterine growth retardation

Abstract
Serum placental lactogen levels were measured in serial samples from 689 women at weekly intervals from 36 to 40 weeks maturity. The mean of two serial levels of HPL was found to be a better indication of growth retardation than the first level alone. The proportion of falling levels in subjects with growth retardation was slightly greater than that of the whole population, but the observation of falling levels was of no practical clinical value.
