Abstract
Tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane in a dose of 44 ml. per kilogram of a O.3M solution was administered to a series of dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium. Seven received THAM alone and seven received THAM with supplementary sodium and potassium chloride. Electrolyte determinations were performed on serum and on samples of skeletal and cardiac muscle. A significant increase in serum pH and total CO2, followed the infusions while serum Cl‐ and Nw decreased significantly. No significant changes in serum potassium concentration were observed. The content of extracellular and intracellular water together with the concentration of intracellular electrolytes in both skeletal and cardiac muscle did not change significantly following the infusions. Thus, THAM is capable of inducing marked changes in extracellular ph and total CO2, without significantly altering tissue water and electrolyte composition. Keywords
