Abstract
The singularity-structure aspects of the Davey-Stewartson equation is investigated and it is shown that the system possesses the generalised Painleve property in the sense of Weiss, Tabor and Carnevale (1983). Further, the associated Backlund transformation in constructed and Hirota's bilinearisation is obtained straightforwardly from the Painleve analysis.
