Abstract
The direct ionization of inner-shell electrons in slow ion-atom collisions is considered. The connection between a first-order expansion in adiabatic (molecular-orbital) states and what is normally called Coulomb ionization is exposed. It is suggested that the ionization from promoted MO can be described as ionization of an electron in a united-atom orbital by the coherent field of both nuclei. Keywords
