Abstract
Both phenomenological and rigorous kinetic theories are used to describe transient effects on the drift velocity and mean energy of ions in drift tubes, assuming that spatial variations are negligible and that ion diffusion is much slower than other processes. The theories are accurate by comparison with Monte Carlo calculations for special cases. Experimental implications are discussed. Keywords
