PULMONARY CRYPTOCOCCOSIS: TREATMENT WITH AMPHOTERICIN B

Abstract
Three cases of cryptococcal pneumonia, one of which developed meningitis, were encountered within 3 years in a small Naval hospital. Two of these were treated with intravenous amphotericin Band recovered. The patient who developed meningitis did not receive amphotericin B and died. The usual toxic manifestations of amphotericin B were encountered. The only one which proved bothersome was thrombophlebitis unresponsive to local measures and anticoagulation. Control was achieved with periodic injections of 1% procaine into the infusion tubing. Although control of the infection with amphotericin B appears to be excellent, surgical excision of affected pulmonary segments appears to be advisable until long term followup of many cases receiving amphotericin B alone is available.
