Abstract
The geographic range, habitats, growth, and certain aspects of the behavior of the land crab, Cardisoma guanhumi, are described. This crab has evolved a considerable independence of water; some animals enter either fresh or salt water only to replace water losses or to spawn, others return to water to feed, to avoid predators, and extremes of temperature. C. guanhumi migrates to salt water to spawn during sharply restricted portions of the lunar cycle between .June and November. Pigmentation of the adult is due to epidermal chromatophores. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
