Abstract
The fungistatic action of Na azide (1-10,000) on members of the genus Candida was confirmed. On this basis its use in routine salivary lactobacillus counts is recommended despite strain variation of the lactobacilli to the chemical. The limit of fungistasis in media already prepared in petri dishes is 5 days but in prescription bottles is maintained at least 6 weeks. A comparison of effect of Na azide on Candida and bacteria indicated action was primarily upon the ironporphyrin components. This was demonstrated for cytochrome oxidase by failure of strains of Candida to oxidize indophenol blue in presence of Na azide. Keywords
