Abstract
This article examines recent survey findings of a range of problems facing British retailers of convenience and shopping products. Perspective is provided in a discussion of phenomena and trends currently affecting the retailing environment. The retailer-problems described are set in six categories relating to the environment: customer; competitor; workforce; supplier; general management; and other external factors. It is conjectured that, as well as the other alternatives referred to, market or customer specialisation is an appropriate strategy for minimising or removing many of the problems identified. Keywords
