Abstract
The formation of serine hydroxymethyltransferase in the active growth phases of E. coli, S. faecalis, L. arabinosus and S. thermophilus has been studied. The results suggest that these bacteria differ notably from each other as regards the occurrence of maxima in enzyme activity during the growth cycle. Investigations concerning especially the lag phase of growth showed a clear increase in the activity of serine hydroxymethyltransferase during that growth period. On the basis of this finding serine hydroxymethyltransferase should be considered a typical "lag phase enzyme".Keywords
