Abstract
Agarose can be extracted directly from G. cylindrica by precipitation of the charged agar molecules in the seaweed extrct with benzothonium chloride and .KAPPA.-carrageenan or finely ground Eucheuma striatum. The colloidal precipitate formed from the reaction of the charged agar and the quaternary ammonium compounds is difficult to filter but, with the addition of .KAPPA.-carrageenan or finely ground E. striatum, the formation of a curd-like precipitate of large particle size is effected, thus facilitating filtration. Extraction of agarose directly from the seaweed eliminates several steps in its preparation such as freezing, thawing, washing, drying and the powdering of the agar. Employing this simple method might significantly lower the cost of agarose production. This publication has 9 references indexed in Scilit:
