Abstract
The cross section for the scattering of sound by a vortex is calculated using the linearized equations of classical hydrodynamics. With a circulation , the differential cross section in the long-wavelength limit is , where is the speed of sound. Possible experimental verification is suggested, with particular reference to liquid He II.
