THE INTERACTION BETWEEN GROWTH PROMOTERS IN APICAL DOMINANCE

Abstract
Summary: The effects of light intensity, day length and nitrogen status on lateral bud growth and endogenous levels of gibberellins and cytokinins were investigated. Low light intensity had little effect on gibberellin levels in the leaves of long–day plants but greatly increased acidic gibberellin levels in short‐day leaves. Both short days and low nitrogen status reduced cytokinin levels in the roots. The correlation between lateral shoot development and endogenous cytokinin levels was consistent with results obtained using exogenous hormones: this correlation strongly suggests that lateral shoot development is controlled by a delicate balance between auxins, gibberellins and root–produced cytokinins.
