Abstract
The spectroelectrochemical behavior of phenylnitromethane (nitromethylbenzene) dissolved in neutral and acidic electrolyte solutions at gold and silver electrodes is described. Observed cyclovoltammetric peaks are attributed to the reduction of the nitro group. Surface Enhanced Raman spectra (SERS) of adsorbed molecules are interpreted based on an assignment of the Raman band of the free PNM using literature data. A coordination via the oxygen atoms of the nitro‐group and consequently a tilted or perpendicular orientation of the adsorbed molecule with respect to the electrode surface are concluded. Keywords
