HEREDITARY DIABETES INSIPIDUS: REPORT OF 20 CASES IN SEVEN GENERATIONS*

Abstract
A female patient with diabetes insipidus is described. Urinary output was 13.5 quarts daily, and findings with the Carter-Robbins test were positive. The course of the disease was complicated by rheumatic heart disease with decompensation and, later, by chronic diarrhea of undetermined origin. The latter improved after reinstitution of antidiuretic therapy. There were many instances of the disease on the maternal side of the family. Investigation by correspondence and interviews elicited a pedigree with 20 cases in 7 generations. Genetic analysis showed that the transmission in this family was by simple dominance.
