Some Anatomical Effects of Kinetin and Red Light on Disks of Bean Leaves

Abstract
Groups of disks cut from bean leaves were given 1 of the following treatments: addition of kinetin to the nutrient medium; exposure to red light; exposure to red light plus the addition of kinetin. After 48 hours treated disks were larger in diameter than the control. Treatment with both kinetin and red light resulted in the greatest size increase. Histological examination showed that kinetin-treated disks have larger cells than the control or those exposed to red light. The results indicate that treatment with kinetin increases cell enlargement and that exposure to red light increases the rate of cell division. Kinetin did not physiologically substitute for red light, but an interaction between the 2 probably exists.
