Abstract
A polymer sample that is subjected to density‐gradient centrifugation distributes itself over a band in the centrifuge cell. From results obtained in previous work, equations are derived which relate the magnitude of the fluctuations in molecular weight and apparent partial specific volume to certain integrals over the polymer band. To obtain explicit results, the assumption is made that both the distribution over molecular weight and that over effective density are narrow. It is found that the distribution of the polymer over the band can, in principle, give quantitative information concerning the magnitude of the fluctuations.
