Chemical Heterogeneity of Foetal Haemoglobin in the Lepore Haemoglobinopathy

Abstract
Summary. The glycine/alanine composition of the γCB‐3 peptide of haemoglobin F obtained from persons heterozygous and homozygous for haemoglobin Lepore has been determined. The mean glycine value for heterozygotes was 0.34 ± 0.1 residues which is similar to that observed in the haemoglobin F of normal adults. A higher glycine value was found in a homozygous individual. These findings are discussed with regard to the light which they shed on the molecular basis for the haemoglobin‐Lepore disorders and related types of δβ and β thalassaemia.
