Abstract
The low-density or Wigner limiting case of the electron gas is studied for its response to a longitudinal electric field. The long-wavelength static dielectric constant is seen to be negative. Some curious features of the dielectric function are explained by comparison of the electron "solid" with the classical Lorentz lattice, of which the Wigner lattice is seen to be a limiting case. Keywords
