Production of $ϒ (1 S)$ Mesons from $χ_{b}$ Decays in $p \bar{p}$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV$

Abstract

We have reconstructed the radiative decays

χ_{b} (1 P) \to ϒ (1 S) γ

and

χ_{b} (2 P) \to ϒ (1 S) γ

in

p \bar{p}

collisions at

\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV

, and measured the fraction of

ϒ (1 S)

mesons that originate from these decays. For

ϒ (1 S)

mesons with

p_{T}^{ϒ} > 8.0 GeV / c

, the fractions that come from

χ_{b} (1 P)

and

χ_{b} (2 P)

decays are

[27.1 \pm 6.9 (stat) \pm 4.4 (syst)] %

and

[10.5 \pm 4.4 (stat) \pm 1.4 (syst)] %

, respectively. We have derived the fraction of directly produced

ϒ (1 S)

mesons to be

[50.9 \pm 8.2 (stat) \pm 9.0 (syst)] %

.
