Abstract
The free energy density for a fluid mixture in the gradient expansion form of Fleming, Yang, and Gibbs is shown to lead to a formula for the surface tension which reduces to the phenomenologically derived result of Bhatia and March under some additional approximations. The status of this latter formula is thereby clarified. Keywords
