Abstract
It is asserted that the conventional method of testing the auditory function of young schoolchildren by means of ‘pure-tone screening audiometry’ is inefficient and unsatisfactory. This method is time consuming and the results depend upon the rapport between tester and child, on the maturity of the child and on the environmental conditions at the time of the test, quite apart from the actual hearing level. Whatever criterion is adopted, some children with completely normal hearing will fail and some with aural pathology will pass. Probably about 10% of the results will be in error in this respect. A new method of screening is proposed. This is based upon a simplified electroacoustic impedance bridge. The method is extremely simple and quick, is readily accepted by children and the results do not depend on either the environmental conditions at the time of test or the degree of maturity of the subject. The accuracy of identification of aural abnormality, particularly secretory otitis media is greatly increased by this method.
