Correlation of seasonal variation of 25-hydroxycalciferol with UV radiation dose

Abstract
Vitamin D status is thought to depend upon personal exposure to UV radiation in addition to dietary intake of vitamin D2. Vitamin D status is usually estimated by measuring blood levels of 25-hydroxycalciferol (25-OHD) because this metabolite has the highest serum concentration of all vitamin D metabolites. Plasma 25-OHD levels were measured in 10 normal subjects at approximately 6 weekly intervals for 1 yr. The mean annual level was 18.4 ng/ml with a seasonal variation from 14-26 ng/ml. These values correlated with serial estimates of personal UV radiation dose previously measured by polysulfone film badges.
