Abstract
To replace the conceptual framework of network theory as based on the building blocks of two-terminal elements, a framework is suggested that is built on the premise that a network element is a black box with finitely many-but not necessarily two-accessible terminals. The greater generality and abstractness of the multipole method give it a considerably broader range of applicability than that possessed by the two-pole method. Keywords
