Stimulation of Gastric Secretion in Dogs by Parenterally Administered Fluids

Abstract
The subcut. admn. of NaCl solns. or the intraven. admn. of water or NaCl solns. frequently provoked secretion of acid by the stomach in dogs. The mechanism of this stimulation is not known. Vagally innervated stomach prepns. responded more frequently and to a greater degree than vagally denervated ones but the effect is probably not a vagal reflex. The secretory response was variable in amt. but in some instances was quite high and lasted for as long as 5 hrs. The cause of the variability of the response has not been detd. Atropine, hexamethonium and pain completely inhibited the response.
