Effect of Age on Polysaccharide Composition of Cartilage

Abstract
Polysaccharide constituents of cartilage from 34 individuals from fetal to 88 years of age were studied. Fetal cartilage was found to be high in uronic acid content. Uronic acid content was strikingly lower by the 6th year and then declined slowly with age. Hexosamine in excess of uronic acid increased with age until maturity, after which there was no appreciable change. A high uronic acid content is characteristic of rapidly growing connective tissue.
