Abstract
The scope of this review is limited to formal chemical kinetics with brief reference to the role of diffusion, and some bearing on isotope kinetics. The special cases dealt with are chosen only as examples to illustrate general concepts. "The results[long dash]-represent the basis for a complete formalism making possible the solution of large classes of rate problems which are of importance in "biology." The discussion shows "that many problems in general physiology fall in that realm, previously regarded as a kind of no-man''s-land, between kinetics and thermodynamics and that the solution of certain problems in energetics and the economy of the cell must be accompanied by the solution of the appropriate rate problems. A meaningful theoretical formulation of such problems as the maintenance of nonequilibrium distributions of solutes, transfer against concentration gradients and the efficiency of metabolic processes will no doubt emerge from a ''successful synthesis'' of kinetics and thermodynamics.".Keywords
