The genus Schizophyllum, as represented by more than 3700 specimens in 40 herbaria throughout the world, is monographed. Four previously recognized species are considered valid, and S. braziliense from Central Brazil and S. palmatum Junghuhn from Japan are described for the 1st time. Extended host and distri-bution lists are given for S. commune (Fr.) Fr. which represents 96% of the observed collections, S. fasciatum Pat., 2%, and S. umbrinum Berk., 2%. The genus PHAEOSCHIZOPHYLLUM is established for S. leprieuri Linder, Known from the north coast of South America. S. fasciatum and S. umbrinum are known only from the Gulf-of-Mexico-Caribbean-Sea area. S. commune, S. fasciatum, S. umbrinum and S. braziliense have been shown to be genetically distinct spp.
