An Innovative Medical School

Abstract
The decision to establish a new school of medicine with its own teaching hospital at the Flinders University of South Australia in 1969 provided a unique opportunity to create in Australia a medical centre in which all the functions of patient care, teaching and research are housed under the one continuous roof. The unique co‐location of hospital and medical school and the implementation of a novel curriculum directed toward patient care from the outset has resulted in an institution which has been used as a model for other medical schools and teaching hospitals in Australia and internationally. Recent innovations in graduate entry, rural and remote teaching programs and admissions are described.
