CALIBRATION OF NEUTRON PROBE IN SOME SELECTED HAWAIIAN SOILS

Abstract
An investigation was conducted in a laboratory with an N-104A (Troxler) neutron probe to compare the calibration curves of different soil materials, determine the depth of maximum resolution, and define the sphere of importance. Statistical tests of regression lines, relating relative counts to volumetric moisture content, indicated that the calibrations for the three materials (silty clay soil, Catano sand, and silica sand) differed from one another. Based on the findings with silica and Catano sand, we conclude that the sphere of importance is within a radius of only 15 to 18 cm and the depth of maximum resolution 15 cm, measured from the end of the probe.
