Abstract
Microbiological production of beta‐carotene previously investigated in shakenflask culture has been scaled‐up to 20‐liter fermentors containing an operating volume of 10‐liters. Yields obtained in shaken flasks, approximately 100 mg./100 ml. have been reproduced with a fermentation time of 72 hr. Factors affecting the fermentation: inoculum, mash ingredients, and environmental conditions, were investigated. Typical data are presented. A preliminary cost analysis indicates a “cost to make” of $31.35/kg. of carotene contained in the dried fermentation solids. This publication has 15 references indexed in Scilit:
