Beta‐carotene production in 20‐liter fermentors

Abstract
Microbiological production of beta‐carotene previously investigated in shakenflask culture has been scaled‐up to 20‐liter fermentors containing an operating volume of 10‐liters. Yields obtained in shaken flasks, approximately 100 mg./100 ml. have been reproduced with a fermentation time of 72 hr. Factors affecting the fermentation: inoculum, mash ingredients, and environmental conditions, were investigated. Typical data are presented. A preliminary cost analysis indicates a “cost to make” of $31.35/kg. of carotene contained in the dried fermentation solids.
