Cerebrospinal Fluid Glycoproteins in Diseases of the Central Nervous System

Abstract
Glycoproteins, total proteins and glucose concentrations have been determined in the CSFs [cerebrospinal fluid] of 161 patients. The glycoprotein values were compared with the values of the total proteins and the relationships between these were investigated. In 51% of the cases a selective rise in glycoproteins and in 21 cases a rise on the total protein only was noted. In 25% of the cases there was a concomitant rise in both glycoproteins and total proteins. The determination of the glycoproteins in the CSF is a more sensitive method of detecting pathological states of the central nervous system than the estimation of the total proteins. It does not seem to be of any value in their differentiation. Some ideas regarding the site of formation of the CSF-glycoproteins are expressed.
