Abstract
The isolation and characterization of an autotrophic bacterium from mine water is described. The bacterium is a gram-negative, nonsporing, motile, aciduric rod, capable of using carbon dioxide as a sole carbon source with energy derived from the oxidation of ferrous iron or elemental sulfur. The specific name Ferrobacillus sulfooxidans sp. n. was proposed to indicate these properties. Keywords
