Abstract
A method is given for the chemical detn. of vit. D in irradiation products of ergosterol and 7-dehydrocholesterol. Results on a range of exptl. products are in close agreement with biological assay figures. Chemical and biological analyses for vit. D3 on 21 commercial irradiation products are recorded and show a good agreement. A study of the u.-v. irradiation of ergosterol, 7-dehydrocholesterol, calciferol and vit. D3 was made. Conditions are given for max. calciferol formation, and factors influencing the process were investigated. The existence of unidentified substances occurring in the irradiation product was indicated and, in some expts., a new substance, suprasterol HI, isolated. A scheme is suggested for the total analysis of the components of an irradiation product.
