Abstract
A hypothesis is presented on the basis of which the amount of vegetative material and the population size of nests was estimated, which were excavated earlier, and of which only volume estimates were available. The estimated average biomass contents of an adult nest of average age (7.4 years) is approximately 190 kilograms (dry weight); 40 kg of substrate and 150 kg of refuse. The estimated average yearly biomass accumulation per hectare is approximately 36 kg. This estimate is primarily based on an average estimated density of 0.4 nests/ha and a so‐called conversion factor of 3.3. The estimated impact of the ant colonies on cattle‐raising in the Lower Paraguayan Chaco may be considered relatively low (Atta‐Nestes mittleren Alters (= 7,4 Jahre) beträgt etwa 190 kg Trockengewicht, davon 40 kg Nahrungssubstrat und 150 kg als Abfall. Keywords
