Abstract
We construct a symmetry-based, competing-interaction model for the phase-transition sequence in betaine calcium chloride dihydrate (BCCD). Our model qualitatively reproduces experimentally observed behavior including the wave-vector sequence and the polarization properties. In addition, the model predicts space-group symmetries for the modulated phases. Keywords
