Abstract
ACUTE orchitis is an alarming and painful affliction. Its association with mumps was clearly described by Hippocrates1 more than four hundred years B.C.:[In an epidemic on the island of Thasus] Swellings appeared about the ears, in many on either side, and in the greatest number on both sides,... neither did any of them come to suppuration,... In some instances earlier, and in others later, inflammations with pain seized sometimes one of the testicles, and sometimes both....Through the years the association of mumps with orchitis has become widely recognized.
