The Significance of Ketosis

Abstract
A review of the origin and utilization of ketone bodies, the regulation of their production and the ketosis of fasting and of diabetes. Except for the nourishment of the central nervous tissue the ketone bodies appear able to supply energy in any case in which glucose is ordinarily required. The onset and extent of ketosis is dependent upon the demand for quick fuel and the shortage of glucose. This shortage may be absolute as in fasting or relative due to an inability of the tissues to utilize glucose as in diabetes.
