Abstract
The giant resonances of nuclear photodisintegration show a strong correlation between their width and the distance from doubly closed shells. In particular the width becomes very great in the rare earth region of large permanent nuclear deformations. It is shown, with the aid of the Nilsson level schemes for a deformed harmonic oscillator potential, that the independent particle model of the giant resonance is capable of providing a quantitative explanation of this broadening. Keywords
